Safe for Summer: The Importance of Water Safety!
The Importance of Water Safety!

Accidents
involving water and drowning can sadly occur within any age group, but are most
common in under six year olds. It is vital that water safety is taught from a
young age to prepare children for the many encounters with water they will have
– whether that’s in a garden, a pool or on a beach.
With summer fast approaching and hopefully more sunshine with it, there will be many opportunities for children to swim, paddle, splash and cool down! Talking about water safety with children can help to prepare them for all different encounters.
Whatever your plans are for this summer and beyond these water safety tips will help to keep your adventures as safe as they are fun!
Here are Fins top 10 water safety tips for all parents and carers:
1.Prepare children with swimming lessons and water safety rules.
2.Children should always go swimming with an adult having active supervision at all times.
3.No matter where they are it is important for them to be aware of their surroundings, this could be the flags on a beach as to whether the water is safe or checking for a lifeguard by a pool.
4.Know how to call for help in an emergency and that it is free to call 999, the emergency services will help to reassure them in the case of an emergency and help to guide them until an emergency response unit can get there.
5.Wear appropriate water safety & floatation devices, but remember that inflatables are not a substitute for supervision or swimming ability.
6.Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, swimming can be tiring particularly in the sunshine.
7.Wearing sun protection is important even when swimming or by a pool.
8.Learning first aid and CPR can be a life saver.
9.If you are going on holiday to a villa or hotel with a pool be mindful of the access to this - children can be adventurous and want to explore.
10. Remember the rules of water safety apply to everywhere, even a paddling pool or pond in the garden.
Please talk about these tips with your kids and ask friends and parents to do the same. Then enjoy the summer and remember to keep having fun!
